TTIP: Not now, not ever

The government is currently involved in secret trade negotiations with the USA and EU that will seriously affect your health – and a whole lot more.

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) is a series of trade negotiations between the EU and the USA. Most political parties claim that it will be a great benefit to the economy. In reality it will be a great benefit only to big business at the expense of our health, our rights, living standards and our democracy.

The negotiations are about opening up access for big multi-national corporations to lucrative public services like health, education and water where big profits are to be made. The NHS is under threat from further privatisation, and TTIP will make it inevitable, allowing every vulture in the US and Europe to dig in its talons in and rip it to pieces.

TTIP also aims at reducing regulation of industries like food, banking and environmental safety. This will mean lower standards, threatening health and safety for workers and consumers. Wages will be driven down and jobs will disappear.

Profits can only be made at the expense of workers’ pay and conditions, which will inevitably suffer if TTIP is agreed.

It is not just a threat to the NHS but to all aspects of our public services.

More, the TTIP talks also involve the introduction of Investor-State Dispute Settlements (ISDS). These will allow unelected and unaccountable companies to sue elected governments where companies claim that government policies are damaging profits. So, a company could sue a government if it imposed health and safety regulations in production, or imposed higher standards in food hygiene, or took privatised utilities like water, gas and oil back into public ownership.

The very fact that these negotiations are so secret reveals how dangerous they are to our health, living standards and democracy.

Do you want a society in which private profit-seeking companies can override democratically elected government policy? Do you want your public services taken over completely by multi-national corporations? Do you want the NHS sold off entirely?

If not, oppose TTIP. And tell your friends about it. There have been big protests against TTIP, especially in Germany where 50,000 marched in opposition in Berlin at the beginning of this year. We need to build the opposition across the continent.

The current lawsuits in EU, filed by Monsanto and others is not so much as to win NOW, but to set up the ability to collect “Damages and LOST Profits” when TTiP is passed.  TTiP like TPP will remove countries ability to block ANY company from doing business, EVEN IN VIOLATION OF LAWS existing in countries protecting people and environment.
